Is hipages worth it for Melbourne tradies in 2026?

hipages charges $419 a month. You share every lead with three competitors. And when you stop paying, the leads stop too. Here's the honest breakdown of whether it's worth it, and at what point it stops making sense.

The honest answer, it depends, but the maths is worth doing first

I get asked about hipages a lot. Usually from tradies who are already on it and quietly wondering if it's worth the $419 a month, or from tradies thinking about signing up who want a straight opinion.

So here it is. hipages is not a scam, it is not terrible, and for some tradies at some stages, it makes sense. But a lot of tradies are paying for it longer than they should. Here's the breakdown.

How hipages actually works

hipages is a lead marketplace. Homeowners post a job, hipages sells that lead to multiple tradies. You pay a monthly subscription (their popular plan sits around $419/month), plus credits to send quotes on individual jobs.

The key word is "multiple". When a homeowner posts a job, hipages sends it to up to four tradies in your category. You are not getting an exclusive lead. You are getting a lead you have to fight three other people to win.

You also do not own anything at the end of it. No website. No Google ranking. No asset. When you stop paying, the leads stop. Immediately.

The real cost per lead

Let's do the actual maths. This is where it gets uncomfortable for a lot of hipages subscribers.

Say hipages delivers roughly four leads a month at the $419 plan. That is $419 divided by four leads, so about $105 per lead. But remember, each of those leads goes to four tradies. If you close at a 25% rate (one in four leads you quote actually books you), the effective cost per job won is closer to $420.

And that is before you count the time spent writing quotes for the three jobs you did not win.

For comparison, one of my clients, ADs Group, runs a website with 12+ exclusive leads per month at $370/month on a Growth tier. That works out to around $31 per lead, and every single one is exclusive. No competition. If they pick up the phone, the job is theirs to lose.

The hidden cost, you do not own the asset

This is the part most tradies do not think about until they have been on hipages for a year.

A website is an asset. Once it is built and ranking on Google, it keeps generating leads whether you are paying anyone or not. Your Google Business Profile, your suburb SEO pages, your reviews, all of that compounds over time. You build something that belongs to you.

hipages is a rental. $419/month to borrow space on someone else's platform. Stop paying, and you are back to zero. After 12 months on hipages, you have spent roughly $5,000 and built nothing. After 12 months with a proper website, you have a digital asset that ranks on Google, builds your reputation, and keeps working after hours.

When hipages is actually worth it

There is a specific scenario where hipages makes real sense. You have just started your trade business, you have zero website, zero Google presence, and you need cash flow right now.

In that situation, hipages gets you in front of buyers while your long-term assets are being built. It is expensive leads but it is immediate leads. If you are in month one and you have bills to pay, waiting six months for SEO to kick in is not always an option.

That is the use case hipages is actually good for. Short-term lead bridge while you build something that lasts.

When it stops being worth it

Six months in, you should be asking yourself whether hipages is still the right call. By that point, a properly set-up website would be starting to rank. Your Google Business Profile would have reviews. Your brand would have some recognition in your service area.

If you are 12+ months into hipages and it is still your main source of leads, that is a signal. Not that hipages has failed, but that you have not built the thing that should have replaced it by now.

The goal was always to use hipages as a bridge, not a destination. A lot of tradies accidentally make it the destination.

The alternative, exclusive leads from your own site

A website built for local SEO works differently. Every suburb page, every Google review, every month of traffic data makes it stronger. The leads are exclusive by default, someone found you specifically, not a marketplace that also listed your three competitors.

Here is a real example. ADs Group came to me with no web presence. I built them a website with suburb-targeted SEO pages. Within a few months they were pulling around 12 leads a month, all exclusive, all inbound, all from people who found them on Google and chose to reach out. At $370/month on a Growth plan, that is $31 per lead with no four-way competition.

Compare that to $420 effective cost per won job on hipages. The numbers are not close.

From $370/month you get a custom website, suburb SEO pages, a CRM dashboard that tracks every lead, a Google Business Profile setup, and automated lead notifications. The whole system. And the leads compound over time instead of stopping the moment you cancel.

So is hipages worth it?

For a brand new tradie with no digital presence and immediate cash flow pressure: possibly yes, for the first three to six months.

For a tradie who has been in business for a year or more and still relies on hipages as their primary lead source: almost certainly not. The maths rarely holds up once you factor in competition, close rate, and the fact that you own nothing at the end of it.

The question is not whether hipages delivers leads. It does. The question is whether those leads are worth $420 each when the alternative builds an asset you own permanently.
